In a significant turn of events in the Asia Cup 2025 trophy and medal controversy, ACC Chief and PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi has tendered an apology to the BCCI for the unruly scenes after the final on September 28. The standoff over the silverware still exists despite the apology, with fans and cricket authorities waiting for the dust to settle. According to India Today, Naqvi moderated his tone at the ACC meeting on September 30. Nevertheless, he stood firm that the trophy and medals would be given to India only if the Indian captain comes to collect them personally from the ACC headquarters in Dubai. India refused this condition, stating that the handover should be according to ACC norms and not based on whimsical requests. BCCI Pushes Back on Trophy Handover BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla expressed that the trophy is the property of the council and not an individual, and condemned Naqvi for accepting the trophy and medals without going through the appropriate formalities. The BCCI has asserted that although they accept the apology, the transfer needs to happen according to official procedures. That was a conscious decision." He further stated: “This does not give him the right to take the trophy and the medals with him. It is extremely unfortunate and unsportsmanlike. We hope the trophy medals will be returned to India as soon as possible.” The issue is that the incident brings into question the protocols of ceremony, the sporting world's collective rules. By putting the handover on a conditional basis and considering the trophy his own property, Naqvi stands to politicize a procedure that needs to be routine. India's reaction emphasizes upholding the institutional ownership of the ACC and ensuring that the procedure is rule-bound. With tensions already running high between the two cricket boards, the apology without the return of the trophy ensures that the narrative will run until the Asia Cup trophy and medals are formally handed over.
