Amidst Ranji Trophy participation debates, Indian speedster Mohammed Siraj strongly advocated that players must be available for domestic matches whenever the schedule allows so. Even though Siraj missed the match on January 23, he played the final match in the group stage against Vidarbha. Representing Hyderabad, he took 4 wickets from two innings; however, Hyderabad lost the match by 58 runs. Speaking about domestic participations, Siraj feels that representing their own state should be mandatory. Not only that, having senior players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in their dressing room will boost the confidence of juniors. To the Sportstar, Siraj said, “When you are free or available as a player, you have to take time out to represent your State. The youngsters in the team will be motivated by your presence. They will get a boost too, sharing dressing rooms with Virat bhai and Rohit bhai. It is a good sign for the new generation." After India's defeat in the Border Gavaskar Trophy, BCCI mandated domestic cricket for selection, leading top players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, and Ravindra Jadeja to feature in the Ranji Trophy. Despite having played nearly twice as many Tests (19) as Ranji Trophy matches, the Hyderabad pacer enjoys bowling long spells without worrying about performance. Since 2021, no other Indian bowler has bowled more deliveries than him, and he recently featured in all five Border-Gavaskar Trophy Tests. While fans urged him to rest, Siraj emphasized that representing India is his biggest motivation. Siraj further said, “Red-ball cricket is my life, and I will do anything to play it. I have always said Test cricket is my everything. When I get the red ball in hand, I enjoy it a lot. I don’t think about my performance too. You can see I bowl long spells. That is because I love this format so much. As a human being, of course, you need some rest from time to time. But when you have the ball in hand, and you are representing your country, you just run in and bowl. Your biggest motivation is playing for the nation. This has been your dream since childhood, so when you get the opportunity, you will want to grab it. I just enjoy the fact that I’m realising my dream of playing for India." Currently not in India's ODI squad for the England series or Champions Trophy, selection of Mohammed Siraj may depend on Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness for the tournament starting February 19.
