After Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant, and Ravindra Jadeja, Indian pacer Mohammed Siraj is likely to play the Ranji Trophy second leg. The second half of the Ranji Trophy will start on January 23; however, Siraj is likely to play on January 30 in the match against Vidharbha. Siraj's domestic team, Hyderabad, is ranked in sixth place with nine points from five matches in the Elite Group B table. On January 23, they will start the second half of the league with the match against Himachal Pradesh. Speaking to IANS, Jagan Mohan Rao, the President of Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) said he is not aware of the reason behind Siraj's absence on January 23. However, he is likely to join before the Vidharbha clash on January 30, at Nagpur. Ravindra Jadeja, Rishabh Pant, Shubman Gill, Rohit Sharma, and Yashasvi Jaiswal will play in the Ranji Trophy, with KL Rahul and Virat Kohli out due to injuries. This follows the BCCI's 10-point policy mandating domestic cricket participation for international selection and contract renewals. Meanwhile, Mohammed Siraj had a challenging run, excelling in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy but being dropped from the ODI squad despite being India’s highest wicket-taker in the format since 2022. Speaking about Siraj's exclusion, Rohit Sharma, the captain of the squad, clarified that Siraj seemed to be less effective unless the new ball is given. And that they are favouring more all-rounder and only 3 fast bowlers, the team decided to sideline Siraj. Mohammad Siraj indeed is undergoing a confusing period with the ball. Almost 157 overs in the Border Gavaskar Trophy did not yield a decent average (20 wickets at an average of 31.15 ) that could offer support to India's lead bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, from the other end. However, if looked at his bowling stats in the ODIs from 2022 to 2024, he has bagged 71 wickets with an average of just 22.97, the highest by any Indian pacer.
