Prior to the fifth ball of the same over, a heated moment occurred between the Indian pacer Mohammed Siraj and Marnus Labuschagne. Marnus stepped away from the crease citing a distraction created by a fan who was standing near the side screen holding a beer in his hand. However, Siraj, who was about to deliver the ball got frustrated after the batter stepped aside and threw the ball wide of the stumps. No other batters except KL Rahul (37) and Nitish Kumar Reddy (42) could even cross the 30 run-mark. The young Indian all-rounder played a vital knock of 42 runs after India suffered a collapse in the 1st session of Day 1. He hammered three fours and three sixes, one of which was a jaw-dropping reverse scoop to Scott Boland which went for a six over the third man boundary. His gutsy knock, and a cameo by Pant and Ashwin along with KL Rahul at the top took India to a not so good, but a total that saved India from being trolled by cricket experts across the globe. With the ball, Jasprit Bumrah drew the first blood, which remained the only one for India on Day 1 as Australia managed to score 86 for 1 at the end of day's play.
