India's five-wicket defeat against England in the first Test at Headingley has prompted senior fast bowler Mohammed Shami to issue a stern warning to the bowling team. Even as Jasprit Bumrah put on a good show with a five-wicket haul in the first innings, the rest of the bowling attack was not able to give the necessary support, allowing England to chase down 371, their second-highest fourth innings score in Test cricket. The loss saw India begin the new cycle of the World Test Championship (WTC) on a disappointing note. Interestingly, India scored as many as five centuries in the two innings but the inept bowling on a pitch that had something for the pacers saw the hosts take the game away and gain a lead in the five-match series. Bumrah ended with tallies of 5/83 in the first innings. But in the second innings, openers Ben Duckett (149) and Zak Crawley (65) confronted Bumrah early on and took on the other pacers. Shami meanwhile asked India's bowlers to take cues from Bumrah and apply their plans correctly. Here is what Shami said on his YouTube channel "In bowling, other Indian bowlers should talk to Bumrah and learn from him. They should talk about planning with him and support him. If they will support Bumrah, then we can easily win the match. If I talk about the first match, then I think we need to do a little work in the bowling," Read also: Jayden Seales fined 15% for send-off to Cummins in 1st Test. Shami, sidelined by injury and not in the team, sat out on the sidelines as Indian bowling failed to place English batters on the back foot following the first-innings brilliance of Bumrah. Mohammed Siraj was unable to translate his hard work into wickets, with Shardul Thakur and Prasidh Krishna appearing ineffective, while Ravindra Jadeja was unable to trouble the batters consistently. "Shardul Thakur and Prasidh Krishna picked up two wickets each in the second innings, but by the time Shardul dismissed two England batters, the match was out of India’s reach. It is very important to take wickets with the new ball. They must support Bumrah. England won the first Test because we gave too many easy runs. We need to find out how to make our bowling side strong," he added. Significantly, Siraj was excluded from the attack from overs 42 to 80 on Day 5 despite being menacing at times except Bumrah. Arshdeep Singh, who had performed well in county cricket, was not selected. But with a week's break for the second Test, the visitors will be hoping to alter their strategy and stage a comeback strongly.
