Mohammed Shami is set to return to the cricket field. The speedster will feature in the upcoming Duleep Trophy and has been included in the East Zone squad. Ishan Kishan, who had a stellar stint with Nottinghamshire recently in the County Championship Division One, has been named the captain of the 15-member squad. In contrast, Abhimanyu Easwaran has been appointed as his deputy. East Zone selectors have shown faith in the left-hand wicketkeeper batter, Ishan Kishan, who scored two half-centuries in the County. But the highlight of the selection will be the return of Mohammed Shami. The 34-year-old seamer last featured in a red-ball match in November last year, playing for Bengal in the Ranji Trophy. His last Test appearance came against Australia in the World Test Championship (WTC) final in 2023. Furthermore, the selectors have mainly focused on awarding the domestic performers; hence, they have included Virat Singh and Sharandeep Singh — both have retained their places in the squad after being the top-scorer in the last season Ranji Trophy tournament. Meanwhile, Bengal’s top scorer in the previous Ranji season, Sudip Chatterjee, didn’t find a place in the squad. The Duleep Trophy will be played in the zonal format. The East Zone squad was selected by a panel of 6-members zonal selectors, including Alokendu Lahiri (Bengal), Abakash Khatua (Odisha), Sunil Kumar Singh (Bihar), Manish Wardhan (Jharkhand), Sumit Ranjah Das (Assam), and Upananda Debbarma (Tripura), with Jharkhand State Cricket Association secretary Saurabh Tiwary.
