Indian fast boweler Mohammed Shami, who was supposed to join the Inian team in the middle of the ongoing Border Gavaskar Trophy, is yet to get a match-fit certificate. Shami suffered from an ankle injury during the 2023 ODI World Cup, for which he underwent surgery. While going through the rehabilitation, his knee pain popped up. Anyway, he came back in competitive cricket in the Ranji Trophy and was named in the Bengal squad for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024-25. However, his injury showed up during a match on Friday, and his BGT dream seemed to get shattered. Shami under scrutiny According to a report from Cricbuzz, a team from the National Cricket Academy (NCA), led by Nitin Patel, is in Rajkot to closely monitor Shami's fitness. BCCI's selection committee member SS Das is also overseeing the assessment. The focus is on evaluating whether Shami can handle the physical demands of Test cricket, should he be called up for the Australian tour. NCA trainer Nishant Bardule is with Patel, and is looking after Shami's fitness drills. Regular updates are being provided to the Indian team and chief selector, Ajit Agarkar, in Australia. Shami’s inclusion in the squad will depend on approval from the board's Sports Science Department. According to reports, Shami is asked to bowl a particular number of balls every day. Also, his condition both before and after the match is being monitored carefully to ensure that he can participate in high-intensity cricket. Before his participation in SMAT, Shami impressed with his bowling and fitness during Bengal’s Ranji Trophy match against Madhya Pradesh, claiming 7 wickets for 156 runs. With all these, confusion has arisen if he can join the team in Australia or not. Actually, it depends on how his body responds. But the situation is not supporting Shami's immediate inclusion. Even if he joins, a little may lead in the series for him to participate.
