Mohammad Azharuddin blasted the Indian batsmen when Shubman Gill's team was defeated by 22 runs in the third Test against England at the historic Lord's Cricket Ground. While chasing a target of 193 runs in the fourth innings, India’s top-order struggled to make a meaningful impact, with the exception of KL Rahul, who showed some resistance. The final session on Day 4 proved to be especially disappointing, as India suffered crucial setbacks. Here is what Azharuddin was quoted as saying by NDTV Sports "I don't think we batted well. Don't think we batted positively in the second innings. If you see, we lost 4 wickets at the end of the day. And then coming into the fifth day, it was always going to be tough, not easy. We needed some good partnerships, as they always say. You can always say anybody can be wise after the event," Yashasvi Jaiswal, Karun Nair, and Shubman Gill all fell cheaply, adding pressure to the innings. Additionally, nightwatchman Akash Deep was dismissed, further denting India’s hopes of a successful chase at Lord’s. The tourists did not enjoy the kind of partnerships they would have liked, and Shubman also expressed the same post the match. The ex-India skipper also praised the tailenders for showing a sense of courage on Day 5. Ravindra Jadeja played an unbeaten half-century, but he had partners from the other side. Azharuddin is of the opinion that Jadeja could have attempted to push English spinners Shoaib Bashir and Joe Root a bit harder. He also said that the Indian batsmen let England take control of the proceedings with the ball. “I must admit and congratulate the tailenders for really putting up that brave front. Ravindra Jadeja really batted well. But I thought that maybe when Root and Bashir were bowling, he could have gone after them in those 4-5 overs. If he had gotten another 15-20 runs, the job would have been much easier. We cannot complain about his batting. The way he batted, stood there like a rock and at the end of the day, the result wasn't much forthcoming for the Indian team. We faltered in the second innings. Rahul batted well too. But at some point, we allowed good bowlers to dominate,” he added. He has not contributed that much with the bat in the series and can be replaced by Sai Sudharsan, who was played in the first Test but then was left out. If Bumrah rests for the fourth Test at Manchester, Akash Deep can be given another chance despite having grabbed only one wicket in the last game. Arshdeep Singh can also be picked. Being a left-arm pacer, Arshdeep would bring variation to the bowling attack. The other bowlers available in the squad are Shardul Thakur, Prasidh Krishna, and Kuldeep Yadav.
