Former England captain Michael Atherton recently recalled an interesting anecdote with cricket great Brian Lara. Lara reportedly indicated to Atherton that young stars such as India's Yashasvi Jaiswal and England's Harry Brook had the potential to surpass his world record of 400 not out for Test cricket. On the Sky Sports Podcast, Atherton said: "I spoke to Brian Lara on the eve of his first record breaking innings, his 375, and I said do you expect somebody to break it? He said somebody will definitely break it because of the pace at which the modern player scores. I asked who is more likely to do it? He mentioned Yashasvi Jaiswal and Harry Brook, he thought perhaps they were likely to have a crack at it." While several legends have drawn close, none has managed to surpass it. Playing against Zimbabwe during the second Test, Mulder finished an unbeaten 367, now the fifth-highest score in Test cricket. He actually had a fair opportunity to go for Lara's record but opted to declare the innings instead, demonstrating that he put the needs of the team ahead of his personal record. This act created controversy throughout the cricketing community. Some applauded Mulder's sacrifice, while others believed that he had let slip a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to rewrite the records. His 367* is now fifth only to Lara's 400 and 375*, Matthew Hayden's 380, and Mahela Jayawardene's 374. While that is happening, the two young players Lara used to mention, Jaiswal and Brook, are gradually making their impact. Yashasvi Jaiswal has already recorded several double centuries in the initial phase of his Test career, exhibiting unbelievable concentration and greed for big scores. On the other hand, Harry Brook stunned the world with a massive 317-run knock against Pakistan in 2024. Both are young, gifted, and have the years and means to attempt something serious at Lara's mythical 400 one day.
