Jasprit Bumrah is famous for being calm in difficult situations but this time around, Sunday night was different. Bumrah had faced perhaps similar punishment for the first time since 2021 when Faf du Plessis hit him for two sixes in an over. The comeback man after 1077 days was Karun Nair, who stepped in as an Impact Sub after the injured Faf in the Delhi Capitals squad. Even the rival captain had to pay respect. Thus, Karun Nair reminded everyone about his stature as a domestic star and one of the in-form batters this season during a rare appearance in the IPL. The star domestic batsman blasted 89 runs off only 40 balls at a staggering strike rate of 222 against Mumbai Indians. Initially left out of the playing eleven, he replaced vice-captain Faf du Plessis, who had sustained some injuries, and immediately made a case for himself to be able to stay in the side. No longer considered exclusively an ODI and Test specialist, Nair anxiously proved his credentials as a T20 player in domestic tournaments. He performed admirably in the Ranji Trophy and was his team's highest run-getter in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. That sparkling form has found his application in the IPL, where he has demonstrated attacking intent and consistency. With Faf not around, it only makes sense that Delhi Capitals have continued to back him. An average of one or two games shouldn't be reason enough to push him out. Delhi should resist quick changes and keep form players without interference in the squad. Well, Nair was more of an option for replacing Vipraj Nigam. Obviously, that will mean playing with just five bowlers, but that is something to balance wisely. It is not going to be easy to fit Karun Nair into the lineup but present form dictates otherwise. Of course, names matter, but a good run with form implies victory-a good knock by someone in form. Right now, Nair is that man.
