Sunrisers Hyderabad’s playoff hopes in IPL 2025 took a severe blow after their 38-run loss to Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad on Friday. The result left the Pat Cummins-led side languishing at ninth place on the points table, where the team needs to win all their remaining matches to stay in contention for the playoffs. Notably, after their last game against CSK, which the team won, they had a brief break. The team used the break to fly to the Maldives to rejuvenate. However, it triggered sharp criticism from former cricketers Deep Dasgupta and Harbhajan Singh. During the game, SRH were sloppy with the ball and poor in the field, conceding 224/6 in the first innings after winning the toss. Their fielding effort, in particular, came under the scanner, with several misfields and dropped chances, including a sitter by Cummins that allowed Jos Buttler to go on and score a match-defining 64. Speaking on Star Sports, Deep Dasgupta didn’t mince words when evaluating SRH’s performance: "It looks like SRH are here physically in Ahmedabad, but mentally they are still in Maldives. We were talking about ordinary bowling, but the fielding has been quite ordinary too." While it may have helped with mental recovery, the team looked anything but recharged on the field. Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh also weighed in with a sarcastic dig: "This ball should have been stopped. The fielder had dived, but not as good as he would have done in the Maldives. They must have jumped and dived around a lot in swimming pools there, but cannot see that on the ground here." Abhishek Sharma’s fighting half-century was the only bright spot in an otherwise forgettable batting effort that ended at 186/6. "Our powerplay with the ball wasn't too great, and we let them get 20-30 runs extra. Let down a few more catches and were the guilty party," he said at the post-match presentation. He also appreciated the way Gujarat Titans batted during the 1st innings. "They are class batters, they do not do anything outlandish and they didn't do anything risky." The result marked SRH’s seventh loss of the season. With only four games left and seven points on the board, their playoff chances now hang by a thread. They will return to action on May 5, where they will host Delhi Capitals.
