Bangladesh have made a significant switch in their cricket team. Mehidy Hasan Miraz has been appointed the new One Day International (ODI) team captain. This was announced just prior to the crucial India vs Bangladesh series in August. He takes over from Najmul Hasan Shanto, who will continue to be the captain in Test matches. šØ Mehidy Hasan Miraz takes charge as Bangladesh’s new ODI captain, replacing Najmul Hossain Shanto. š§š© pic.twitter.com/r4hwg14P8V — CricketGully (@thecricketgully) June 12, 2025 A Fresh Start After a Poor Champions Trophy Bangladesh performed poorly in the latest Champions Trophy. Due to that, the team has thought of doing some adjusting. Miraz, who is known to be one of the team's top players, will now captain the ODI team. He will first have the opportunity to captain the team during the Sri Lanka series in July before the India series. He had captained Bangladesh in four ODIs against the West Indies and Afghanistan last year. Although Bangladesh lost all those games, the BCB identified something special about him and provided him with an opportunity once again. In a statement, Mehidy Hasan Miraz said: “It is a huge honour for me to be entrusted with this responsibility by the board. Leading the country is a dream for any cricketer and I am grateful for the confidence the board has shown in me. I have every faith in this team. We have the talent and the belief to play fearless cricket. I want us to perform with confidence, play without inhibition and continue giving our best for the country." Earlier, Najmul Shanto was appointed as captain in all three formats, Tests, ODIs, and T20Is, back in February last year. However, since then the performance of the team has declined. The BCB is also undergoing some transition and has now decided to adopt split captaincy. Now, Miraz will be captain in ODIs, Shanto will remain Test captain, and Liton Das will be responsible for the T20 team.
