Almost a year has passed since the shoulder-barge incident involving Virat Kohli and Australia’s opener Sam Konstas at the Melbourne Cricket Ground during the 2024 Boxing Day Test. This moment sparked quite a bit of discussion, but now, Oliver Peake, who was Konstas’s close friend and Australia’s 12th man that day, has finally shared what was actually said between the two during that heated exchange. This incident took place during what would be Kohli’s last Test series for India. Meanwhile, Australia had brought in the 19-year-old Sam Konstas, who made an immediate impact with his debut innings. His confidence and daring shot selection threw the Indian bowlers off their game, ultimately leading to the confrontation with Kohli. Konstas had just reverse-swept Jasprit Bumrah and was on his way to a fifty, which clearly rattled the Indian bowlers. In an attempt to throw the teenager off his game, Kohli made a shoulder charge during a change of ends. This led to some heated words being exchanged, prompting the umpire and Usman Khawaja to step in and diffuse the situation. Although Konstas later downplayed the incident, Peake revealed the exact words Konstas shot back at Kohli. Uzie was a bit taken aback by the way he was going about it. He just looked so in the zone and so confident that he was looking fine out there. It was great to watch as a fan and also as a mate. When Kohli shoulder-charged him, Sam said, 'I know you're a good player, but have some respect," This confrontation became a hot topic throughout the series, with the ICC eventually fining Kohli 20% of his match fee for the physical contact. Many critics argued that the punishment was too lenient given the circumstances. But that wasn’t the only drama surrounding Konstas during the series. In the following Test at the SCG, he found himself in a verbal spat with Jasprit Bumrah. Konstas’s comments just before the final ball of the day seemed to frustrate Bumrah, who responded by bowling out Usman Khawaja with the very next delivery. Despite a solid debut innings of 60 off 65 balls at the MCG, Konstas struggled to keep up his form. A series of low scores followed against India and later the West Indies, which ultimately led to him being left out of Australia’s squad for the first Ashes Test of 2025-26.
