The first Test against West Indies at barbados won see those oddly unorthodox leaves during batting, as Cricket South Africa has dropped the opener Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith has been sidelined due to his injury. Labuschagne is paying the price for ongoing off-form, which again got highlighted in the World Test Championship final. In both innings, Marnus scored 17 and 22 respectively, failed to counter the South African bowlers, resulting to a 5-wicket defeat. Cricket Australia chief selector George Bailey, in a statement, said that Marnus is an important member of the squad. The team is working with him behind the lens to work on his flaws and come back stronger. In the statement, Bailey said, "Marnus at his best can be a really important member of this team. He understands his output hasn't been at the level we, or he, expects. We will continue working with him on the areas of his game we feel he needs to rediscover. We continue to value his skill and expect him to work through the challenge positively." Speaking about Smith, Bailey said, "Steve needs more time for the wound to heal so we'll give him another week's rest and assess his functionality after that." Meanwhile, Jos Inglish and Sam Konstas have been added to the squad as replacements for Smith and Labuschagne. Konstas, who made a notable debut during last year’s Boxing Day Test against India, is expected to open the innings alongside Usman Khawaja. Inglis, having notched a century on debut in Sri Lanka earlier this year, is anticipated to take a spot in the middle order in the absence of Steve Smith. However, Cricket Australia has stated that the final batting lineup will be announced closer to the start of the match. Bailey added, "We have made the decision to give Josh and Sam the opportunity to replace Steve and Marnus. We are excited to see them get the chance to further their fledgling Test careers." Australia will look to recover from their WTC Final setback as the Test series begins in Barbados, followed by fixtures in Grenada and Jamaica.
