Marcus Stoinis has been brought back into Australia's T20I team for the next three-match series against New Zealand after a gap of more than 10 months. The matches will be held at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui on October 1, 3, and 4. Stoinis played his last T20I for Australia in November 2024 against Pakistan at Hobart, during which he hit an unbeaten 61 off only 27 balls to assist his team in attaining a target of 118 runs in 11.2 overs. The 36-year-old player has played 74 T20Is and has scored 1,245 runs and taken 45 wickets. Australia's Squad Changes Cricket Australia confirmed that Mitchell Marsh will captain a 14-strong team for the series, following hot on the heels of Mitchell Starc's T20 international retirement. Test and ODI captain Pat Cummins will miss the series to deal with a back complaint before an Ashes heavy summer, and Nathan Ellis is also out due to paternity leave. In a release, Cricket Australia said: “Aussie selectors announced a 14-player squad for the whirlwind six-day trip to Mount Maunganui, which followed the shock retirement of Mitchell Starc from T20 internationals. Men’s Test and one-day international captain Pat Cummins will also miss the tour to manage a back issue in preparation for a blockbuster Ashes summer, while Nathan Ellis will be on paternity leave with wife Connie expecting the couple’s first child." Cameron Green has been omitted to attend to Sheffield Shield games for Western Australia as he looks to return to bowling before the Ashes. Glenn Maxwell and Adam Zampa will be the spinners, with backup from Matt Kuhnemann. Tim David, Ben Dwarshuis, Sean Abbott, and Travis Head adds more depth in the line-up. This series would be a significant test for Australia as they gear up for the T20 World Cup next year, allowing selectors to assemble their greatest attack without Starc.
