Australia's ICC Champions Trophy 2025 preparations have encountered another hurdle as seam-bowling all-rounder Marcus Stoinis announced his stunning retirement from ODIs. Cricket Australia (CA) confirmed on Thursday, February 06 that Stoinis, who has played 74 ODIs for Australia, will now focus only on T20 cricket. His decision came at a time when the team was fighting with multiple injury concerns ahead of the big-ticket tournament. The 34-year-old, who made his ODI debut in 2015, played a crucial role in Australia's 2023 ODI World Cup title-winning campaign. The loss of Stoinis is the latest addition to Australia's woes, which already saw Mitchell Marsh ruled out of the Champions Trophy due to his persistent back injury. Captain Pat Cummins is also heavily unlikely to feature, recovering from an ankle issue. Josh Hazlewood is more than just a day into a tight race. Steven Smith and Travis Head seem to be the ones they will call upon to stand in for the captain role. The Australian team would be looking to take quick action following the sudden exclusion of Stoinis from the Champions Trophy squad. The 22-year-old all-rounder impressed everyone with bat and ball in recent times to make him a valuable addition to the squad. Connolly was all guns blazing in BBL 2024-25, scoring 351 runs at an average of 50.14 and a strike rate of 131.46. He played crucial knocks under pressure, finishing as Perth Scorchers' top run-scorer and winning the Player of the Tournament award. His ability to float in the batting order and contribute with the ball makes him a well-rounded choice. Recently, Connolly received his Baggy Green before the second Test against Sri Lanka in Galle International Stadium. This 6'4" tall pace-bowling all-rounder marked his international debut with a strong performance in the Sydney Test against India, making him top score for Australia in the first innings and sealing the victory with a crucial 39-run knock, which made medium pace difficult to score off. In white-ball cricket, Webster has been quite good, making a good show in the Big Bash League 2024-25 for Melbourne Stars. The 1,317 List A runs at 31.35 average and with a strike rate of 77 make him quite stable and potent with power-hitting. With his recent good form in the domestic circuit, playing under pressure, he's a like-for-like replacement that Australia might be seriously looking for. Will Sutherland Image Source: Getty Images Will Sutherland is another potential candidate to fill Stoinis' shoes. A talented all-rounder, Sutherland has already featured in two ODI matches, scoring 18 runs at a strike rate of 54.54. His international experience is limited, but his performances in the domestic circuit have been noteworthy. Sutherland is a good hitter as well as an effective medium paceman, thus he has much to contribute for the side. He also stands up for big pressure moments with the ball in hand, creating crucial breakthroughs for Australia during the Champions Trophy. Thus, he would certainly be considered one of the good prospects in Australia's plans.
