The South African lower-order batter Marco Jansen did an interesting thing in their first innings batting against Pakistan in the second Test of their tour at the Rawalpindi Stadium. It happened during the 80th over while debutant Asif Afridi was bowling to him. Afridi bowled an outside off delivery and Jansen stepped down the track to hit it. However, halfway, he realized that he was not only getting the ball but was also quite far away from the crease and had a chance of being stumped out. Jansen then simply left the ball, jumped back, and put his bat down on the crease. The wicketkeeper Mohammed Rizwan was ready to topple the bails but restrained himself, watching Jansen back. Skipper Shan Masood (87) and Saud Shakeel (66) provided the backbone of the innings, while Keshav Maharaj spun South Africa back into the contest with a brilliant 7 for 102. In reply, South Africa started cautiously but lost openers Aiden Markram (32) and Ryan Rickelton (14) within the first 20 overs. However, Tristan Stubbs (68*) and Tony de Zorzi (55) steadied the innings with a solid century partnership. De Zorzi’s dismissal late in the day halted the momentum slightly, but Stubbs continued to anchor the innings confidently alongside Kyle Verreynne (10*). By stumps on Day 2, South Africa had reached 185/4 in 65 overs, trailing Pakistan by 148 runs. With Stubbs well set and the lower order yet to come, the Proteas looked poised to gain first-innings control on Day 3.
