Former India cricketer and presently the commentator, Sanjay Manjrekar, feels India is a "panic mode." and has criticized the Indian selectors and team management for supporting KL Rahul despite failing repeatedly. He has also urged the selctors to keep an eye on the Bengal-based opener Abhimanyu Easwaran. Manjrekar, speaking to ESPNCricinfo, said, "Clearly, India is in panic mode. They are a bit shaken by what happened against New Zealand at home. And that's when plans start to go awry. And that is where I believe that one has to actually look at it in a different way, where you think there's nothing to lose here." Manjrekar promotes Easwaran, highlights his ton in Australia The 0-3 loss against New Zealand in the home test series has brought criticisms about the decision-making, including the squad selected for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Not only that, Rahul was dropped in the last two tests against the Kiwis wanting Sarafaraz Khan to give a chance. Rahul later flew to Australia to play the second unofficial test against Australia A. The middle-order batter promoted himself to the opening slot, keeping in mind that Rohit Sharma won't play the first match of BGT. Manjrekar highlighted India's persistence with Rahul, despite his underwhelming performances. He said, "KL Rahul should consider himself very lucky to be getting opportunities... Such comebacks and opportunities, very few players over the years in the history of Indian cricket have been given this kind of a deal." Manjrekar accepts that Easwaran may not have provided enough assurance to the selectors, but at least he has a century in Australia to brag about. Easwaran has four centuries in four straight matches across three competitions before being picked in the BGT squad. In light of Rahul's recent struggles and Easwaran's potential, Manjrekar believes it's time for India to consider a new opening partnership, possibly with Easwaran alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal.
