The Kolkata Knight Riders are playing their final home game at the Eden Gardens against the Mumbai Indians on May 24. And there, Mitchell Starc stunned even Manish Pandey, taking a diving catch in the unbearable humidity in Kolkata. In the 9th over, third ball, Lungi Ngidi bowled a slower ball slight full in length outside off. Manish Pandey tried to smack it over long on, but went too flat. Starc had to run in, and then gave a full dive, grabbing the ball in the air. Even though he fell down, he made sure that the ball was in the air, trapped in his palms. Even at 37, Starc taking a stunner recalls his early days when he used to play school cricket. Before becoming a left-arm pacer, he worked with gloves. From the age of 9 until about 14, Starc played as a primary wicketkeeper for Northern Districts and Berala Sports Cricket Club. He even represented Homebush Boys High School behind the stumps. Around age 14, legendary talent scout and coach Neil D'Costa noticed his towering height and immense natural pace. During school matches, Starc occasionally bowled, and he was getting so fast that the school's backup wicketkeepers literally could not keep up with his deliveries. The coach famously told a young Starc that he would not make the Under-16 representative teams as a wicketkeeper, convincing him to drop the gloves and focus entirely on left-arm fast bowling. In a fascinating coincidence, Starc met his future wife, Alyssa Healy, during those early Northern Districts junior cricket sessions. At the time, Healy actually aspired to be a fast bowler while Starc was the wicketkeeper. Eventually, they completely swapped roles—Starc went on to become an elite global pace spearhead, while Healy became the star wicketkeeper and captain of the Australian Women's National Cricket Team.
