Maharashtra batter Ankit Bawne has been handed a one-match suspension for showing dissent against the umpire's decision. The team was informed about this before their Ranji Trophy sixth-round Group A match against Baroda in Nashik. Before the white-ball season began, Bawne refused to leave the field after being given out in the fifth-round match against Services. Video evidence suggested that the ball might have bounced before left-arm spinner Amit Shukla's slip catch by Shubham Rohilla. Bawne was the stand-in captain for that match. The match was only streamed live and was not telecast on TV hence, DRS was not available. He refused to leave the field, and the game had to be delayed for nearly 15 minutes. The game resumed after the intervention of the match referee Amit Sharma and Maharashtra coach Sulakshan Kulkarni. Kulkarni later slammed the quality of umpiring in domestic cricket after the incident. Maharashtra's coach Sulakshan Kulkarni expressed his views by saying: "Players are subject to fines and reprimand, what about proper assessment of umpires. Why do the same erring umpires continue to officiate and play spoilsport? When there are blunders of this nature, the anger is justified." Bawne has been the top run-scorer for Maharashtra this season with 361 runs in five matches at an average of 51.57. He has one century and two fifties ahead of his name in this season. Currently, Maharashtra stands at the second-last position in Group A. Chances for qualification to the play-offs are very bleak, and the team cannot get more than 22 points. Already, Baroda and J&K have collected more points in the group.
