South Africa, the reigning World Test Champions, are set to face Zimbabwe in a two-match Test series starting June 28 at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo. However, they will be without their regular skipper Temba Bavuma, who picked up a hamstring injury while batting in the recent World Test Championship final against Australia at Lord’s. Veteran left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj, also a player in the WTC final, will captain the Rainbow Nation during the two-match series. Bavuma, however, will be subjected to more tests to assess the seriousness of the injury. This isn't the first instance that the South African Test and ODI skipper has been laid up with a hamstring injury. In fact, it is the third such hamstring injury that Bavuma has endured in less than two years. He was hurt in the 2023 ODI World Cup and featured in the semi-final, and subsequently during the Boxing Day Test that year. South Africa have announced 15 players who will take the trip to the neighbouring nation to play the red-ball series. Only the second Test, which starts on July 6. Up to five uncapped players have been included in the team. All-format specialists such as Aiden Markram and Kagiso Rabada, who were part of South Africa's WTC final victory, have been rested. They were defeated by an innings and 45 runs by the Three Lions. But Brian Bennett made the cricket community proud with his thrilling century, as he made a 143-ball 139, hitting 26 boundaries. Old warhorses Sean Ervine and Sikandar Raza also played flowing half-centuries during the Test match, and Blessing Muzarabani picked the wickets of Joe Root, Harry Brook, and Ben Stokes.
