India's former cricketer Madan Lal has given his opinion on the balance of the team before the Asia Cup 2025, which will take place in Dubai from September 9 to 28. The opening pair of India has been a subject of interest, with three persons who are being considered: vice-captain Shubman Gill, wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson, and young left-hander Abhishek Sharma. Abhishek Sharma has impressed in T20Is with his attacking intent, while Suryakumar's deputy Shubman Gill brings consistency at the top. Samson, meanwhile, offers flexibility, as he can either open or slot into the middle order. This has sparked debate about who should partner Abhishek when India begin their campaign. Speaking to ANI, Madan Lal expressed his satisfaction with the selection by saying: "I’m satisfied because it should have been done. Abhishek Sharma’s strike rate is more than 225, and Shubman Gill’s strike rate is more than 150. Opening is very important in T20Is. In the first six overs, the openers set the game. Then, after that, you have to ensure that your average is around 7, 8, or 9 and continue until the 14th or 16th over. In the last three to four overs, you have a big hitter like Hardik Pandya and Axar Patel." Lal emphasized that India's batting depth is good, but the first six overs will determine how the team plays. He opines that opening with Gill and Abhishek provides India with aggression and stability, and Samson's adaptability can provide support to the middle order. India have a range of options in this area, namely Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakravarthy, and Axar Patel in the regular squad, with Washington Sundar as an alternate. Emphasizing the role of spin in such weather, Lal said: "It’s very hot here. Spinner’s role will always be more crucial here. It’s very hot, but the thing is to get the breakthrough early on, and then the spinner comes in. We have the best spinner in the world. If we get a breakthrough in the beginning, then the spinners can be very lethal, and they can do a wonderful job. Spinners will play a big role. Afghanistan has four spinners and Pakistan has three. Most of the countries depend on the spinners." As India pursue glory in the Asia Cup 2025, they will seek the proper balance with balanced batting firepower and a powerful spin attack.
