Bengaluru's M Chinnaswamy Stadium is poised to miss out on hosting games in the next ICC Women's ODI World Cup after the Karnataka government declined permission for the ground to host matches. The move comes following the tragic stampede on June 4 during Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL win celebrations, which cost 11 lives. According to the reports by TOI, the ICC has initiated discussions with the Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) for relocating some matches to Thiruvananthapuram's Greenfield Stadium in Karyavattom. KCA president K Jayesh has confirmed that discussions have already started with ICC officials. Thiruvananthapuram Becomes Alternative Host The Chinnaswamy Stadium had been initially awarded five matches for the tournament, including the final in case Pakistan didn't qualify. But the commission headed by Justice John Michael D'Cunha ruled that the stadium was "fundamentally unsafe" for hosting big events. This had already compelled the Maharaja Trophy T20 tournament to be relocated to Mysuru this year. Thiruvananthapuram's Greenfield Stadium, with a 50,000-strong capacity, is well-positioned to fill the gap. It has already hosted six international games, last in November 2023. Its bigger seating capacity than Chinnaswamy could build an even greater ambience for the Women's World Cup. Jayesh stated: “We assured him that Thiruvananthapuram is ready to host the Women’s World Cup matches. We have the necessary infrastructure in place." He added: "While he is still awaiting ICC’s decision. It’s not yet confirmed how many matches we will host. We are waiting for the ICC’s nod and several logistical challenges still need to be addressed.” The tournament is happening between September 30 and November 2, giving the BCCI and ICC minimal time to finalize a new schedule. Bengaluru's loss could also affect RCB's future in IPL 2026 if safety issues of the stadium are not resolved.
