Australia comfortably won the first Test against Sri Lanka by an innings and 242 runs at the Galle International Stadium. The game ended pretty quickly as Australia dominated every session, leaving Sri Lanka struggling throughout the match. On the fourth day, the weather forecast was much more favorable than it had been the previous day when only 27 overs could be bowled. Sri Lanka were already in arrears by 518 runs when they lost Kusal Mendis to Matthew Kuhnemann and continued losing wickets to be bowled out for 165. Australia then enforced the follow-on. For the second time in less than 24 hours, Sri Lanka's openers were dismissed for single digits. The highest scorer in Sri Lanka's first innings was Dinesh Chandimal, with a good partnership of 69 runs with Angelo Mathews. However, Chandimal was caught in the last over before lunch. Dhananjaya de Silva and Kusal Mendis gave an impression of solidity at first but fell quickly, and Sri Lanka lost seven wickets. Jeffrey Vandersay, on his second Test, fought back with a good knock of entertaining nature that ended in a maiden half-century. He did not last much longer and saw the game through Sri Lanka's defeat. The second Test is to be played at the same venue on Thursday, February 6. The Lankans would look forward to betterment and avoid a huge loss again. This is the biggest defeat for them so far in a Test match.
