Shoaib Akhtar has come out strongly in support of Azam Khan, who continues to face criticism over his fitness and recent form. Speaking on a local sports platform, the former Pakistan pacer not only backed the power-hitter's potential but also laid down a bold challenge to inspire both the player and his critics. “Azam Khan is a very good cricketer who has faced unnecessary backlash,” Akhtar said, calling the criticism unfair and excessive. Azam, who is known for his explosive strokeplay, has often been in the spotlight for his physical condition rather than his cricketing abilities. But Akhtar believes the wicket-keeper still has time to silence his doubters. "If I were in his place, I’d make a documentary on myself of losing 40 kg in 100 days and then prove my power-hitting by scoring a century in 33 balls," Akhtar said. He then issued a direct and motivational call to the batter: "If you’re listening to me, and I know you always do, just do it and show the world what you’re capable of." Azam Khan has had a quiet PSL season so far, managing just 20 runs in two innings at a strike rate of 117.64. The legendary pacer said he values Shadab primarily for his bowling and leadership, brushing aside his batting contributions. "I am more interested in him as a bowler and I always recognise him as a bowler... I don’t care about his batting," he said. Akhtar also spoke about the importance of a healthy team environment, crediting Shadab for fostering unity within the squad. "Players are shaped in dressing rooms and team environments. If you create difficulties for them, their performance will reflect that. He keeps the team united and doesn’t allow any issues to arise", Akhtar said. Shadab’s form and leadership have been instrumental in Islamabad United’s unbeaten run. The franchise sits comfortably at the top of the PSL 10 table with three wins from as many games. They next face Karachi Kings on April 20.
