It is a very rare occurrence for a Test match to be abandoned without a ball bowled. Bad weather has, since 1877, been the reason for such an abandonment on only eight occasions in Test history. Recently, Afghanistan's one-off Test against New Zealand joined that list. Here are the other instances: List of Test Matches Abandoned Without a Ball Bowled England vs Australia, Old Trafford 1890 In 1890, a Test series was underway between England and Australia at Old Trafford, Manchester. The third Test never even started as it rained on every single day. At the time, Test matches were played for just three days. W.G. Grace had led England to victory in the first two Tests to make it an eighth successive Ashes series win. England vs Australia, Old Trafford 1938 This Test series between the two, in England, almost 48 years later was also at Old Trafford, in which the third Test, too, was abandoned without a toss as a result of rain on all four days. At the end of the first three Tests of this series, the scoreline read 0-0. After this, England and Australia won one game each to make it a series-ending one-all Australia vs England, MCG 1970 Late in 1970, Australia and England were engaged in a seven-match Ashes series. A no-result rain abandonment in the third Test at the MCG meant the first-ever one-day international was staged on the scheduled fifth day of the abandoned Test. It was the first-ever Test not featuring either Australia or England to be completely washed out. The boards of New Zealand and Pakistan subsequently arranged an ODI match on the scheduled fourth day instead, which the hosts won with ease by an eight-wicket margin. West Indies vs England, Georgetown 1990 In February 1990, the series between England and West Indies was in play. While England won the first Test, rain on the first three days ensured that the second Test in Georgetown, Guyana was abandoned without a toss being made. An ODI was held on the fifth day instead. Pakistan vs Zimbabwe, Faisalabad 1998 In 1998, Zimbabwe sprang a surprise on Pakistan in Peshawar, drawing in Lahore. The last Test was held in Faisalabad but because of heavy fog, no play could be possible on the first four days. Though improvement in conditions gave hope for a start on the last part of Day 4, the match was called off without a ball being bowled. With that, Zimbabwe won the series 1-0. New Zealand vs India, Dunedin 1998 Late in 1998, India was on tour to New Zealand. The first Test at Dunedin was washed out without a ball being bowled on the day that the Pakistan-Zimbabwe match was also washed out. The series was compressed to two matches and New Zealand managed to emerge victorious, with a win and a draw. Afghanistan vs New Zealand, Greater Noida 2024 Afghanistan and New Zealand were to play one-off Test at Greater Noida Sports Complex Ground, India in 2024. For the first time in nearly 26 years, and a first in the 21st century, a Test got washed out on all five days of its scheduling without a single ball bowled. The game was an important one in Afghanistan cricket history, who were set to take on New Zealand for the first time since they were granted Test status.
