India's cricket squad is on the cusp of a new era in ODI cricket as Shubman Gill assumes the captaincy from Rohit Sharma before the Australia series later this month. The 26-year-old right-handed batter will become the 28th player to captain India in ODIs, covering over 51 years and over 1,000 matches. Gill's selection follows four years of Rohit Sharma's captaincy, the period in which he guided India to the 2023 ODI World Cup final and the 2025 Champions Trophy victory. Rohit's skipper career saw India bag 42 out of 56 matches, the result yielding an impressive 75% winning rate, one of the highest among India's top ODI captains. Talking regarding the shift, a BCCI official stated: "Shubman has been consistent with the bat and shown excellent leadership qualities. This is a natural progression for him, and we are confident he will continue India’s success in ODIs." Rohit Sharma's ODI Captaincy Record Rohit Sharma is still one of just seven Indian men to have captained in 50+ ODIs. He was instrumental in India's Champions Trophy victory earlier this year, smashing a match-winning 76 in the final versus New Zealand. His white-ball legacy will continue, though his attention will now switch away from captaincy. At the same time, Shubman Gill's ascension has been quick but equally merited. In 55 ODIs to date, Gill has amassed 2,775 runs at a rate of 59.04, with eight centuries and a double century (208 vs. New Zealand in Hyderabad, 2023). Gill is now part of an elite group of Indian captains as the side looks forward to the 2027 ODI World Cup in Australia.
