The legendary Argentine footballer Lionel Messi is likely to play a cricket match at Mumbai's Wankhade Stadium as a means of the promotional event. According to a report from the Indian Express, Messi will be playing a seven-a-side cricket match against a team starring former Indian captains MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli on December 14. The event agency concerned is currently looking at the logistics and is trying to bring Sachin Tendulkar and Rohit Sharma on the field too. They have even requested the Mumbai Cricket Association Board (MCA) to block the stadium on the concerned date. An MCA source said Indian Express, "Messi will be at Wankhede Stadium on December 14. He is likely to play a cricket match, too, with former and current cricketers. The organisers will come up with a complete schedule once everything is finalized." This would mark his second visit to the country and his first since 2011, when he led Argentina in a friendly against Venezuela at Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium. Initial reports suggested that Argentina’s national football team, including Messi, might travel to India in October for a friendly, following an agreement between the Argentina Football Association (AFA) and the Kerala government. However, that plan is currently on hold, as per latest updates. Messi, now 38, plays for Inter Miami in Major League Soccer (MLS). He remains focused on competing in one final FIFA World Cup in 2026, aiming to defend Argentina’s title after their triumphant campaign in Qatar in 2022. If the December visit is confirmed, fans across India may get a rare chance to see the global football icon once again.
