Indian chess Grandmaster Divya Deshmukh created history by winning the FIDE Women's Chess World Cup 2025 in Georgia. She defeated veteran Indian compatriot Koneru Humpy in the final, generating a hard-to-come-by all-India title confrontation on the global chess platform. The win also established Divya as India's 88th Grandmaster and the fourth Indian woman to claim the coveted World Cup honours. Divya's victory was hailed by her ex-coach Srinath Narayanan, who emphasized her talent to deliver when the going gets tough. Talking to PTI from Chennai, Narayanan added that Divya always performs under pressure and always delivers in crucial matches. To drive his point home, he even equated the young chess sensation with god-like Indian cricketer MS Dhoni, who is famous worldwide for staying cool and wrapping up matches in critical situations. As Dhoni established his record by winning matches for India in closely contested cricket matches, Divya too has demonstrated such qualities by winning tight chess fights on the international platform. He said: "Her strength is, I think, turning up in those big moments, crunch situations. Like how Mahendra Singh Dhoni used to win the matches in the last over. I saw something similar in Divya in those last-round situations or situations where everything was hanging in the high-pressure moments." In the Final, Divya defeated Koneru Humpy, a legend who has dominated Indian women's chess for more than 20 years with numerous titles and medals. The victory consolidates Divya's position as the new face of Indian women's chess. While Dhoni, the player Narayanan likened her to, is on break from cricket now. The captain of the 2011 World Cup team last turned out for Chennai Super Kings during IPL 2025, with the public waiting to hear about his return. Divya's victory is credited as a huge milestone in Indian chess, and comparison with Dhoni shows how much faith people have in her capability to manage high-pressure situations.
