Cricket is set to make its Olympic comeback at the 2028 Games in Los Angeles. On Tuesday, the LA28 Organising Committee announced the venue for the Cricket competition. The matches are scheduled to be held at a specially constructed temporary venue at the Fairplex in Pomona, Southern California. The Fairplex in Pomona is situated approximately 50km from downtown Los Angeles and is a 500-acre events complex. In 2028, it will add Olympic cricket to its legacy, marking the sport's first appearance at the Games since 1900, when Great Britain took on France in a two-day match in Paris. A total of 90 players will participate across the two events. Each team will consist of 15 players. However, details regarding qualification criteria and rankings are still to be announced. Jay Shah, Chair of the ICC, welcomed the update. "We welcome the announcement of the venue for cricket at Los Angeles 2028 as it is a significant step towards the preparation for our sport's return to the Olympics. Although cricket is a hugely popular sport, it will be a fantastic opportunity to expand traditional boundaries when it features in the Olympics in the fast-paced, exciting T20 format that should appeal to new audiences." Notably, this will not be the first time a high-profile cricket match has taken place at a temporary venue. Earlier, in the 2024 Men's T20 World Cup, which took place in the West Indies and the USA, saw temporary venues. A temporary stadium in New York hosted several high-profile matches, such as India vs Pakistan. Other matches were played at Central Broward Park in Florida and Grand Prairie Stadium in Texas.
