Sri Lanka's 30-year-old wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis has joined the history books in the Asia Cup 2025. Playing against Hong Kong in match 8, Mendis equalled Sri Lanka's record for most T20 international dismissals by legendary wicketkeeper Kumar Sangakkara. Mendis was also astute behind the stumps as he claimed up two dismissals, assisting the Lankan bowlers to dismiss Hong Kong's top order batters Zeeshan Ali and Babar Hayat. These two dismissals took his count to 45 wicket-keeping dismissals in T20Is, the same most by any Sri Lankan along with Sangakkara. What is even more special about the milestone is that Mendis reached the landmark in 56 innings, just like Sangakkara. This indicates his consistency and his increasing role in the Sri Lankan side. Given that he still has some years left, Mendis is likely to overtake Sangakkara and create a new national record in the near future. Hong Kong played first and demonstrated fight. Openers provided them with a decent start, but after the powerplay, they lost their way. A solid partnership between Nizakat Khan and Anshuman Rath turned around the innings. Rath fell short of his half-century by two runs, while Nizakat smashed his fifty in the final over, being only the second Hong Kong player to achieve a 50+ in Asia Cup history after Babar Hayat. Even so, Hong Kong's total of 149 will not necessarily be sufficient to match Sri Lanka's formidable batting order. Nevertheless, the team has provided itself with an outside opportunity with some disciplined bowling.
