Badale said, “We are delighted to have Kumar return as head coach. At this stage of the team’s journey, his familiarity with the squad, thoughtful leadership, and alignment with the Royals’ values offer the perfect combination of stability and continuity.” He added that Sangakkara’s calm approach, clarity in decision-making, and cricketing acumen would be critical as the franchise seeks to rebuild after a disappointing season. Sangakkara’s return comes after a high-profile trade in which wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson moved to Chennai Super Kings, while RR acquired all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran. Ahead of the December 16 mini auction in Abu Dhabi, the Royals released seven players: Akash Madhwal, Ashok Sharma, Fazalhaq Farooqi, Kumar Kartikeya Singh, Kunal Rathore, Maheesh Theekshana, and Wanindu Hasaranga. The moves reflect a strategic effort to strengthen the squad and align with Sangakkara’s vision. With IPL 2026 approaching, Sangakkara’s dual role as Director of Cricket and head coach positions him to steer the team’s tactical and developmental priorities, providing both leadership and continuity within the franchise.
