India's talented openers KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal created history in the ongoing Test match against England at Old Trafford. They became the first overseas opening pair in the past decade to remain unbeaten until lunch on Day 1 of a Test in England, with at least 20 overs having been bowled during the session. This is a rare success for overseas openers in England, where the ball swings heavily and batting is always difficult during the first session. The previous time overseas openers had done this was long ago in 2015, when Chris Rogers and David Warner did so for Australia at The Oval. Over the last decade, even England's own openers have struggled to achieve this. Just two England partnerships have remained unbeaten to lunch after 20 or more overs have been bowled in the first session. The first was Rory Burns and Dom Sibley during the 2021 game against New Zealand at Edgbaston. The second was Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett during the game against Zimbabwe at Trent Bridge this summer. Not only did their work ensure India made a good start, but it also established the fact that openers could survive the difficult early conditions if they remain concentrated. The duo remained unbeaten at Lunch, taking India's score to 78-0 after 26 overs. However, on the last ball of the fourth over post Lunch, Chris Woakes bowled loose short delivery outside off which nipped away sharply. Rahul, who was well set on 46 punched away from his body and close his bat early. Due to this, the ball took a thick outside edge and it traveled straight towards Zak Crawley who was positioned at the third slip and Crawley made no err. Rahul steady innings of 46 off 98 with four fours came to an end soon after the lunch break.
