Not in the recent past, when Shreyas Iyer was trolled heavily by the KKR fans for not being able to defend a 200-plus run against Sunrisers Hyderabad, and today, it's the Kolkata Knight Riders who couldn't chase 111 runs in Mullanpur! Shreyas Iyer and co. got back their winning momentum, thanks to Yuzvendra Chahal's timely comeback, as the hosts shattered Kolkata Knight Riders in a low-scoring thriller, defeating KKR by 16 runs! The match started with the usual humdrum regarding the toss decision, but Shreyas Iyer was visionary. Apparently, it wouldn't have been a loss from Iyer's perspective had KKR won the toss, because they would have chosen to bowl first! Iyer cleared that the teams that batted first won the match, and he proved it right since the very first over of defending! But honestly, questions should be there about whether Punjab was impulsive or not. At every point when the batters should have looked to settle down and build partnerships, they looked for big hits, resulting in the entire batting line fumbling down! Punjab suffered just two bowled outs and one lbw, and the rest got caught while trying to hit shots. Punjab started well, with Priyansh Arya going good, hitting three boundaries and one six. Well, his 30 run-innings ended with Ramandeep Singh taking a catch of Harshit Rana's length delivery. Harshit Rana, the undisputed starboy of the match, took Shreyas Iyer also, for a two-ball duck, thanks to Ramandeep, who dove forward to grab the ball. Prabhsimran Singh is the other man to score decent runs, 30, but fell prey to the Rana-Raman duo again. Even Shashank Singh (18) failed to score, lacking enough partners at the tail. Punjab could have added a few more runs if Xavier Bartlett had not left his non-striking crease, especially after seeing Vaibhav Arora had already got the ball in his hand and would chip off the bails! Clueless enough for Arshdeep Singh, his partner, to stand stunned at the batting end. As said earlier, Harshit is the star boy from the KK's side, picking up three wickets, with an economy of 8.33. The spin duo Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine got two each, while Vaibhav Arora and Anrich Nortje took one each, ending Punjab's story within 15.3 overs as PBKS got bundled out for 111! The KKR batting line-up looked way more fumbled compared to Punjab's. Marco Jansen broke the first base, got the big hitter Sunil Narine clean bowled with a length. Captain Ajinkya Rahane's dismissal was nothing short of unfortunate! Had he taken the review, he would probably be batting, and who knows, he would have saved the team from the wreckage! But that was Yuzi's first taste of blood, sweet or sour, but enough to pump him up for more! That bloke went on to take 3 more, registering his second-best digits in the tournament, 4/12 till his third over. Special mention, despite KKR's falter, goes to Angkrish Raghuvanshi. That bloke really tried, scoring 37 runs off 28 balls, but got dismissed trying to get a biggy off Chahal. Iyer played with the nerves, shrank the field, and restricted possibilities of singles, provoking Andre Russell to go only for big shots. Falling prey to this, Vaibhav, who saved an over with defense and squats, failed in the last off getting a slight edge of his gloves from Arshdeep's as Josh Inglish completed the catch. Coming back to Russell, he did manage some gaps, scoring 17 runs that mostly came against Yuzi's final over, as the latter climbed to 28 runs at the end of 4 overs. But it had to end. Marco, brought in for the supposedly final over, gave a short-of-a-length ball angled into the right-hander from around the wicket. Russell, trying to go big again, missed the line as the ball crashed into the stumps! With that, Marco bagged 3 wickets, giving 17 runs. Xavier Bartlett, Arshdeep Singh and Glenn Maxwell got one each. At a point when 111 looked like a minnow score, Captain Iyer, with his Sher Squad, proved it big enough to defend. And yes, it is the lowest ever score defended in the Indian Premier League.
