On Thursday, June 5, Shubman Gill and Gautam Gambhir attended a press conference at around 7:30 pm and sited several issues. Be it the omission of key players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma or Shubman Gill's captaincy style, the coach-captain duo answers the press on different topics. Here, we are summing up a few of the important key points from the pressy. I | Gill batting and captaincy: The era started with a massive debate on how Gill, despite having poor batting stats, can get to lead the team. On being asked about that, Gill accepted his issues with his batting and has acknowledged his struggles. He further assured that, being a captain, he will work on his batting and look to score more runs in the series. He said, “As captain, you want to win every match, but when I am out there as a batter, my focus is only on scoring as many runs as possible for the benefit of my team. Having said that, averages and numbers are not something I look at, but I do want to lead with my performances with the bat.” Notably, he has 1893 runs comprising five centuries, averaging 35 in 32 matches. Speaking about his captaincy, he ensures to inject safety and security into his players. Unfazed about the Bazball style approach from England, Gill added, "I don’t have any particular style. As I get more experience, my personal style will come forward. I like having communication with players and talking to them. I want to make a bond with players. It is important. Understand their weakness. If players feel secure, they can give 100%." On Bazball, Gill said, "They play a certain way. I think we saw that when they came to India as well. It's very exciting for us. It gives us an opportunity, a great challenge. If we are very proactive with our execution and with our plans, I think it would put them under immense pressure." 2 | Bumrah saga: As speculated earlier, due to workload management, India's key fast bowler will not be playing all five Test matches. And last night, Gambhir confirmed that Bumrah will play 3 Tests. However, which three is no confirmed. The management will see the conditions and determine the playing XI. Gambhir clarified, “Not decided which 3 Tests Jasprit Bumrah will play. Lot will depend on the results and where the series is heading. We have picked enough bowlers. Lot of our of pacers are in great space to win us Test matches from any position. When you have someone like Jasprit Bumrah, depending on how many matches he plays, will be a great sight for us. It’s difficult to replace Jasprit Bumrah but I said during Champions trophy, we have enough quality." Nair, who has been out of the Indian Test setup since 2017, has earned a recall to the squad after a gap of eight years, with his last appearance coming against Australia. Gambhir said, "It's always good to have the experience of Karun who has played a bit of County cricket as well. He is in really good form. He scored a double hundred for India A. It's always good to have players especially on these kind of tours who are in good form and are among runs as well. His experience will definitely come in handy and hopefully, he can deliver." Not only that, he said to give the players a run and not judge them on the basis of a match or two. He added, "More importantly, we will not judge someone by just one or two Test matches, you guys (the media) can, but we won't because I think if someone has scored heaps of runs, I think he will be given a decent run so that he can showcase his talent at this level as well." 4 | Is Gambhir under pressure? As per Gautam Gambhir, the coach is always under pressure and is hungry to win. Despite a stellar win in the 2025 Champions Trophy, he feels that the pressure did not ease off from his shoulders. He said, "I am always under pressure irrespective of whether we got the results or not. If you would have asked me this question after New Zealand (series), I would have said 'yes, I am under pressure'. After Australia (tour), I would have said 'yes, I am under pressure." He added, "After the Champions Trophy, I am still under pressure because me being the coach, you always want the results. Every game you are part of this team, you want to get the results."
