India is still in shock after the terrible terror attack on tourists in the Pahalgam Valley in Kashmir. The attack claimed 26 lives and injured many others. Since then, people across the country have shown anger not only towards the attackers but also towards Pakistan. The incident has also created tension between the rest of India and the people living in Kashmir. There is increasing pressure from citizens and fans for the BCCI to halt all cricket matches against Pakistan. Most feel that competing against them does not make the right impression at such challenging times. What Happened to Cricket in Kashmir? India had won the World Cup a few months prior to this, but this time, they were defeated by the runner-up of the Prudential Cup 1983, the West Indies by 28 runs. India batted first and posted 176 in 41.2 overs. Kris Srikanth was the top scorer for the side with 40 off 91. Other batters also played some handy innings, but they could not convert those scores into a big number. The match was affected by rain, resulting into India's defeat by 28-runs. The second game was on September 9, 1986, when India was defeated by Australia by 3 wickets. India batted first in that game and scored 222 in 47 runs, with Sunil Gavaskar scoring the most runs for India (52 off 56). However, India failed to defend the total as Allan Border scored 90 off 106 to guide Australia to three-wicket win. Since then, there has been no international game played in Kashmir. For 18 years, the stadium was occupied by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) as a base, and thus cricket could not be played there. The stadium has witnessed more political events than sports events over the years. Also Read | Watch: Jaiswal Reacts Angrily to Hazlewood’s Send-off Why Are Matches Not Held There Anymore? There are two large reasons why Kashmir has not welcomed international matches for nearly 40 years. First, the security of players is a major concern. Second, the stadium hasn't been modernized like other stadiums in cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai or Bengaluru. Due to these issues, the BCCI hasn't selected Srinagar as a location for any major cricket matches in recent decades.
