New Zealand hammered India 3-0 in the Test series and scripted history by becoming the first team to clean-sweep India on Indian soil in three or more Test match series. What grabbed the spotlight in the series was the poor batting display of senior Indian batters, including Virat Kohli and skipper Rohit Sharma. He managed to score only one fifty that too came in the first Test match. Rohit failed to even cross the 20-run mark in the rest of his inning. Rohit scored 91 runs with an average of 15.17 in the New Zealand series. Meanwhile, Virat Kohli too failed miserably in this series. Virat Kohli has been already going through a rough patch in his Test career this year. He scored 93 runs with one fifty-plus score and with the lowest-ever average of his career in any home series of 15.50. Former Indian cricketer Karsan Ghavri has put forth a more drastic suggestion regarding Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. He believes that if they do not deliver strong performances in Australia in the upcoming months, it may be time for them to retire. In a conversation with the Times of India, Ghavri said: “Definitely, 200 percent yes. They need to score big. If they don’t perform, it’s time for them to call a time on their Test careers. If they don’t perform in Australia, Virat and Rohit should retire. They have done a lot for Indian cricket, but the team needs runs to win. We need to build a team for the future. How long will we keep players who aren’t performing?” Aside from Rishabh Pant and Yashasvi Jaiswal, the Indian batting lineup struggled to make an impact during the series, with most players failing to deliver. As Team India prepares for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy, they must step up their performance if they hope to secure a spot in the WTC final.
