Chief Minister Siddaramaiah recently gave the go-ahead to a proposal from the Karnataka Housing Board (KHB) to develop a world-class sports complex in Surya City, Bommasandra, including a cricket stadium with an 80,000 capacity. After it is completed, it will rank as India's second-largest cricket stadium after the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad that has space for 1,32,000 spectators. The KHB will finance the entire INR 1,650 crore project without the help of the state government. Spread across 100 acres of land, the complex will offer to indoor and outdoor sports. In addition to the cricket stadium, there will be facilities for eight indoor and eight outdoor games, state-of-the-art gyms, training centres, swimming pools, guest houses, hostels, three-star and five-star hotels, and a convention hall to host international events. This came after the fatal stampede outside Bengaluru's M. Chinnaswamy Stadium during Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL 2025 championship celebrations on June 4 that resulted in the death of 11 people and injured some. The Justice John Michael Cunha Commission, which conducted an inquiry into the incident, found that the 32,000-capacity stadium, which occupied only 17 acres, was not appropriate for mass events. He also suggested moving them to a larger area with improved amenities and parking. The call for relocating the stadium to the outskirts of the city has seen an upsurge following the tragedy. Five police officers were confirmed by the Chief Minister to have been suspended in relation to the accident, while the intelligence chief as well as his political secretary were removed. This incident is saddening, but no misstep was taken by the administration. Legal action has been taken against those found guilty, so there is no question of embarrassment for the government. The government will look into shifting the cricket stadium to another location. Such an unpleasant incident should not happen under any government. Personally, this incident has hurt me and the government", "Five police officers have been suspended in this case. The intelligence chief and the chief minister's political secretary have been replaced. The case has been taken seriously and appropriate action has been taken," he added. At the same time, Bengaluru is seeing several proposals for sports infrastructure. The Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) has floated tenders for constructing an advanced stadium in Dr. K. Shivaram Karanth Layout on the city's northern periphery, while the Greater Bengaluru Development Authority (GBDA) is drawing up a sports city at Bidadi, with Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar suggesting that it should be able to host the Olympic Games.
