The Karnataka Government has turned down M Chinnaswamy Stadium from hosting any matches during the 2025 Women's World Cup, citing severe safety issues following the stampede during the RCB victory parade. Not only that, the government refused KSCA's proposals of hosting matches in a closed corridor. Apart from matches, sources revealed that the Chinnaswamy stadium was supposed to host the opening ceremony too, which is now being planned to shift to other venues. The decision comes after the cabinet accepted the findings of the Justice John Michael D’Cunha Commission, which declared the stadium “structurally unsafe” for hosting major events. The Karnataka State Cricket Association has obviously been left frustrated with the outcome and cited how they have hosted 750 matches and nearly 15 IPL seasons smoothly. In their defense, they even said that the victory celebration was a privately held event and not a match. The inquiry found that the stadium’s design and infrastructure are inadequate for managing large crowds safely. Key issues highlighted included limited entry and exit points, poor access to public transport, absence of proper queuing zones, insufficient emergency evacuation procedures, and a shortage of parking facilities. The report emphasized that organizing major events at the venue presents significant safety hazards. Authorities also pointed to serious crowd control failures during the June 4 celebrations, assigning partial blame to the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), event organiser DNA Entertainment, and senior police officials. Investigators noted a lack of police presence outside the stadium and no ambulances on site, with only 79 officers stationed inside. Following these findings, the stadium was earlier barred from hosting the KSCA Maharaj T20 Trophy. Consequently, the BCCI is likely to revise the tournament venues and schedule ahead of the September 30, 2025 start date.
