New Zealand head coach Rob Walter has affirmed that there are still talks ongoing over Kane Williamson's availability for the current home summer. Although a final decision has not yet been reached, Walter explained that Williamson will be allowed time to decide when and where he will play for New Zealand. Williamson, who has a casual contract with New Zealand Cricket (NZC), has been choosy about his playing engagements for the year. He avoided the recent three-match T20I series against Australia as well as the Zimbabwe tour, opting to play county cricket and The Hundred in England instead. New Zealand's home summer features limited-overs series against England, followed by an all-format series against the West Indies in November. Addressing reporters on Monday, Walter added that while Williamson's participation is guaranteed, the timing of his return is still being discussed. Walter said: "With Kane, we're still in conversations as to what the summer is going to look like. He will play, no doubt about that. Just what and where is still in discussion." He said players on casual contracts are in different circumstances and are entitled to flexibility with their commitments. "I think the reality is we're dealing with all the guys on casual contracts, actually in different positions from a playing point of view. Kane is one of those (who deserves time) and he deserves the opportunity to sit and talk about what the rest of his year will look like." Walter also commended Williamson's commitment to playing for New Zealand, even as he juggles other cricketing responsibilities. "But I keep coming back to the most important thing, (which) is that he wants to play for his country, and so nutting out exactly what that looks like can take an extra week or two, but surely, he deserves that." Finn Allen (foot injury) and Adam Milne (ankle injury) will not be available for selection. But the head coach was upbeat about the recovery of Mitchell Santner, white-ball captain, from a groin problem, and Rachin Ravindra, who went without playing in the T20I series against Australia after having suffered a face injury during training. "I think we don't live in an ideal world and so that's part and parcel of it. I've been part of a World Cup campaign (with South Africa) where the team assembled at its full strength three days before our first game and that team managed to make a final." Emphasize Team Culture and Preparation Walter underlined that establishing a good team culture is more vital than getting the entire squad together early. He is confident that New Zealand will have their complete World Cup side in place by the India series in January. "For me, it's just the way it works. I think what's more important is the environment and the team culture that sort of assimilates together when it needs to. We do know that by the back end of the India series (in January) prior to the World Cup, that's when our full World Cup squad will be together." He further said that as long as the players are playing competitive cricket and are still linked with the team culture, they can easily come back to the setup. Walter concluded saying: "For me, as long as the guys are playing competitive cricket, that's important, and almost everyone has been part of the environment at some point so I would assume that they can fit seamlessly back into it."
