Australia fast bowler Josh Hazlewood produced a match-winning effort in the series opening one-day international against India at the Optus Stadium, Perth. On a vibrant pitch providing pace and bounce, Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc together destroyed India's top order, and the home team emerged victorious by seven wickets. Hazlewood removed key wickets of Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer, dampening India's early momentum in the innings. In his post-match comments, he highlighted the need for such conditions for Australia's bowling attack. Hazlewood told The Age: "Perth always offers some nice bounce and pace, which has served us well in the past, especially with our bowlers who all offer something different." The pitch at Optus Stadium yielded sharp and challenging bounce, which enabled Australia's tall pace bowlers to use the surface to good effect. India, captained by Shubman Gill, were reduced to 25 for 3 inside the first 10 overs following a scorching spell by Starc, Hazlewood, and Nathan Ellis. [My] rhythm felt good off the back of New Zealand. Everything is feeling good at the moment, a nice way to start the build [to the Ashes]." Australia is preparing for the Ashes series against England, which will start on November 21 in Perth. The team may, however, miss their captain Pat Cummins for the first Test as he is still recovering from a lower back injury. Hazlewood recognized the toll taken by quick bowling on the body and explained how pacers tend to play despite tiny ailments. He said: "Every fast bowler has a niggle or two, and after a while, it just becomes part of your routine as a quick." The 33-year-old also felt confident in his physical condition, adding: "My body feels great right now. I am very confident of getting through all five [Tests] without any dramas." As the Ashes is about to start in Perth, Hazlewood's recent performance on the same turf might prove to be a huge morale booster for Australia. His rhythm and form make him one of the players to look out for as Australia look to retain the coveted urn once again.
