South Africa Under-19 opener Jorich Van Schalkwyk created history on Friday in Harare as he became the first player to score a double hundred in men's Youth ODIs. The 18-year-old right-handed batsman blasted 215 runs from 153 balls against Zimbabwe Under-19 in the first match of the tri-series. Van Schalkwyk's record knock consisted of 19 fours and six sixes, leading South Africa to an enormous total of 385 in their first innings. His 215 not just helped his team overshadow but also shattered the former highest individual score in youth ODIs, 191 by Sri Lanka's Hasitha Boyagoda against Kenya in 2018. He also had a vital 178-run third wicket partnership with Jason Rowles, who scored 76 before being short of a century. Despite Tatenda Chimugoro picking up six wickets for Zimbabwe, conceding 62 runs in his eight overs, South Africa’s batting proved too strong. In response, Zimbabwe’s batting line-up collapsed under pressure and were bowled out for just 107 runs, handing South Africa a huge 278-run win in the opening game of the tri-series. Van Schalkwyk's breathtaking knock saw him receive the Player of the Match award. With two successive scores of 150-plus in youth ODIs, the young opener has already emerged as one of the brightest names in junior cricket.
