IPL teams have begun sending players home with the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season facing an untimely suspension. Fans received unexpected news in a video shared by Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). Just before the break, RCB captain Rajat Patidar sustained a wrist injury. Last week, when pre-match footage came out, Patidar was seen with a splint on his arm. Given this, wicketkeeper-batter Jitesh Sharma was expected to captain RCB against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on May 9 at the Ekana Stadium. Jitesh stated: “I was very grateful for the opportunity given to me. They were giving me an opportunity to captain RCB and it’s a very big thing for me and my family. I was thinking of what the right combination would be because both, Devdutt [Padikkal] and Rajat were not available and it was a big responsibility to replace them. And as per the position we were on the points table, we would have won this game. All of this was going on in my head and all the meetings with coaches and players in those 2-3 days, batting order, discussions with bowlers. I had good fun.” In the same video, RCB acknowledged national priorities. With rising tensions in India and Pakistan, it appears the IPL may be delayed a further week. If this prevails, Patidar will recover and Jitesh will lose the unique opportunity to captain the side. 𝘕𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘴 𝘧𝘪𝘳𝘴𝘵! He has delivered pertinent cameos in a lower middle-order position, and has been in charge as a keeper. In 2024, Jitesh had his first opportunity to captain, when Punjab Kings had their final league game against Sunrisers Hyderabad. He managed to come to the crease towards to end of the innings, scoring 32 off 15 pulls as Punjab Kings managed to finish with 214. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to win and Punjab finished a disappointing ninth on the points table. Prior to the IPL 2025 season, Jitesh spoke about leading a team like RCB in a dedicated podcast session with Cricxtasy and his honest assessment on the pressures and excitement of being an RCB captain. He Added: “No, I never thought about it [captaincy]. Frankly speaking, I never even considered that I was being looked at for captaincy. If I were in RCB management, I would have chosen Rajat too—he deserves it. He is RCB’s guy and has done service for them for years now. I just joined now. I can help as a senior, since Rajat and I both belong to the Central Zone and have played cricket together. We already have a strong bond. And all the Indian players in RCB will support him as well.”
