Chennai Super Kings have officially roped in South Africa’s young gun Dewald Brevis for the remainder of the 2025 IPL season. The move comes as a replacement for left-arm pacer Gurjapneet Singh, who has been ruled out. CSK, sitting at the bottom of the points table, are now desperately tweaking their options—and Brevis may just be their glimmer of hope. The 21-year-old’s arrival is not a usual mid-season shuffle. It’s calculated, bold, and expensive. Despite having a base price of just ₹75 lakh in the auction, the five-time champions have shelled out a whopping ₹2.2 crore to secure Brevis’ services. The deal was only possible because CSK had one vacant overseas slot in their roster. For a franchise known for its calm head and composed planning, this aggressive move underlines their crisis. While he has only featured in a handful of international games for South Africa, he’s been lighting up T20 leagues worldwide. His previous IPL stint with Mumbai Indians—10 matches in total—showed promise, though he couldn’t lock a consistent spot. He continues to feature for MI in MLC and SA20, but CSK have now poached the gem. In the SA20 earlier this year, Brevis was one of the standout performers. Among the top ten run-scorers, he boasted the best strike rate—an eye-popping 184.17. He has also been in sublime touch in domestic cricket, particularly for Titans. Across 81 T20s, Brevis strikes at nearly 145—no fluke, no flash in the pan. This is CSK’s second injury replacement this season. Earlier, they had brought in Ayush Mhatre to fill in for skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad. With just two wins in the first half of the league, the yellow brigade needs a jolt. Perhaps Brevis, with his fearless hitting and youthful audacity, can offer that. His debut for CSK could come in their high-voltage clash against Mumbai Indians on April 20 at the Wankhede—against the very team that once had him.
