New Zealand won the second Test against India and gained a 2-0 lead in the three-match series with a 113-run win over the host on Saturday. It has been India's first home Test series defeat since the 2012-13 when they lost to England 1-2. Indian Skipper Rohit Sharma did not blame individual players for the series defeat against New Zealand. Instead, he urged his teammates to "trust their plans" to succeed against tough opponents. In the post-match press conference, Rohit stated that he always believed in his team and how they would react after such a debacle. He spoke about the batting woes of the team and how crucial it was to put runs on the board for the bowlers. In the post-match press conference, Rohit said: “I don’t doubt anyone’s ability. I won’t go into a detailed post-mortem, but batters need to develop their strategies and believe in them, as we saw with New Zealand’s approach." He added: “It’s disappointing, not the outcome we expected. Credit to New Zealand; they outplayed us. We didn’t rise to the challenges presented.” While speaking about the batting struggle of India, the skipper highlighted the worth of runs of the boards as it would assist the bowlers. Restricting them to around 250 in the first innings was a good effort, but the pitch didn’t offer much. Things could have looked different if we had gotten closer to their score in the first innings." Though the series loss was a shocking disappointment, Rohit assured his team that they would raise their game for the third test in Mumbai. He is of the belief that the players can show much better and that is possible. Rohit said: “We aim to deliver a much-improved performance at the Wankhede. I view this defeat as a collective setback, not just the responsibility of the batters or bowlers. We’ll come out with renewed intent, better ideas, and improved methods for the final Test." The series loss further made an impact on the Indian team's position in the World Test Championship 2023-25, despite being placed at the top of the table. Rohit stated that the defeat had an emotional undertone to it and that this team learned from the defeat and would henceforth move on. To conclude, he said: “I’m hurting because we lost the game. Right now, I can’t focus on the future or what this means for the WTC Final. We didn’t perform as we should have, and that’s painful. There are areas we need to address as a team.”
