The Sun Group has decided to rechristen the Northern Superchargers. Owners of the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL and Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the SA20 had decided to enter the English franchise market last year after the England and Wales Cricket Board started the sale of The Hundred franchises. The Sun Group ultimately won a three-way battle to win the Hundred franchise. As part of the deal, a 49% stake was sold by the ECB at £100 million (Rs 1092 crore) at the time of purchase. But the ECB had kept the complete acquisition door open. The English board had promised the counties that they would retain a majority holding (51%), and then it would be up to them. Sun Group discussed this with the Yorkshire County Cricket Club, buying out the Northern Superchargers; now, before the 2026 season, it's renamed the Hundred franchise as Sunrisers Leeds. The difference between SRH and the others is that neither MI nor LSG acquired the two franchises they invested in. MI purchased a 49 percent holding in the Oval Invincibles, while LSG attained a 70 percent stake in the Manchester Originals. However, both will be allowed to rename the franchise. The ECB has allowed the IPL owners to rebrand even if they have a minority holding. There’s a possibility that Oval Invincibles will be called MI London and Manchester Originals will be renamed as Manchester Super Giants. Both the franchises have done so in other cricket leagues as well. The GMR Group, that bought the majority stake in Hampshire County Cricket Club, could rename the Southern Brave too. The renaming of Northern Superchargers to Sunrisers Leeds by The Sun Group heralds a fresh era for the franchise in The Hundred 2026. As owners from the IPL expand their reach globally, fans can now look forward to a new identity, better branding, and high-voltage competition in the next edition of The Hundred.
