Shreyas Iyer has often stood out as a captain in the Indian Premier League, leading three different teams to the final. And this is what former England player Monty Panesar feels is the real problem. According to Panesar, Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir will be choosing someone younger and an easy-to-handle player like Shubman Gill for the team. Shreyas Iyer is believed to have had a clash with Gambhir, who happened to be the mentor of Kolkata Knight Riders, in 2024, when Iyer led the team to the team's third trophy. Even reports suggested that Iyer was not in the 2024 Champions Trophy plans. It was Rohit Sharma, the team's ODI captain, who insisted on having his Mumbai teammate with him. Panesar recently had a chat with India Today where he said, “One of the reasons Shreyas Iyer is probably struggling to get into the Indian squad is because he brings those leadership skills and, at the moment, possibly they’ve got that covered. It gives them an opportunity to bring in someone younger, a bit more exciting to play, who would be easier to manage for coach Gautam Gambhir." Recently, another report suggested that the team was looking at Iyer to succeed Rohit Sharma as the captain in the ODIs, which was later denied by the BCCI members, who said that Gill has age on his side, and he will no doubt be the successor. The man pulled 600+ runs with 6 centuries, with his 97* being his best. Panesar believes that even if captaincy sounds like a bane, if he keeps performing, the door might open too. Panesar added, “So, I think he (Iyer) being the captain in IPL, makes it a bit difficult for him to get into that team. But I do believe, if he keeps scoring runs, he should be playing." Moreover, Panesar believes that India is crowded with talents, and it has the ability to play multiple teams across the world. "But it’s just the talent, the talent is unbelievable. I think India has never been so blessed and lucky that they can pull out probably 2 to 3 teams right now and compete against the world."
