India's new era with head coach Gautam Gambhir appears to be going full-throttle, and another huge change could soon follow. With Rohit Sharma having taken a break from Test cricket and Virat Kohli having retired from the format, another huge decision with Rohit appears to be on the cards. In a report by Dainik Jagran, Shubman Gill has been decided upon as India's future ODI captain in place of Rohit Sharma. Though the BCCI has not made it official yet, a top official apparently told the media that Gill will be captain of the team in the 50-over format shortly. This follows Gill's sensational stint as Test captain on the England tour. He hammered two tons and one double century in the opening two Tests and guided India to a comprehensive 339-run victory in the second match at Edgbaston. His captaincy is already being recognized across formats. Also Read | Watch: Nitish Reddy Wrecks England with Two Wickets in One Over Is Gill Now Going to Lead in All Formats? The report further indicates Gill will be back as vice-captain in T20Is, with Suryakumar Yadav remaining the skipper for the time being. With the Bangladesh tour being delayed, India's next ODI job will come in the tour of Australia in October 2025, and Gill will most probably step out as captain. In a social media video going viral, a fan questioned a RevSportz reporter about the future ODI captain. The reporter answered, "One of the top BCCI official told me that Gill is the next ODI captain and he will comeback as vice-captain in T20Is." His choices until now, dropping Rohit from Tests and leaving it to Gill, have already caused significant upheaval. With Gill in line to be groomed as the ODI captain as well, it appears that Rohit's white-ball days too might be numbered. Though no official word has been received by the BCCI so far, the writing appears to be on the wall. Everyone is now waiting to see if the board is going to ratify it before the next ODI series commences.
