The stage has been set for Manav Suthar to shine on the big occasion with the spinner performing brilliantly in India's one-off Test against Afghanistan in Mullanpur. Suthar finished the innings with an incredible bowling figure of 6/33 in the first innings and contributed significantly to India's innings and 300 run win. Becoming the 10th Indian and 7th spinner to take a five-wicket haul on Test debut, the Rajasthan all-rounder's spell also caught the eye of former India captain Sunil Gavaskar. Gavaskar was impressed with Suthar's control over his line and length. The young man's performance at such an important juncture is a sigh of relief for the Indian side. India needs to invest in long-term spinners with the veterans like Ravichandran Ashwin having retired and Ravindra Jadeja in his twilight phase, the management must look for the next generation. Not just with the ball, Suthar was good with the bat as well. He contributed with 28 off 41 balls which included two fours and two sixes and already has one century and six fifties to his name in first-class cricket, showing he is more than capable of being an all-rounder. Gavaskar Praises Suthar's Control and Accuracy Gavaskar was delighted with the manner Suthar dominated the Afghan batsman. "People say a spin bowler is successful in India because he gets help from the pitch. The conditions are favourable for him. But I would say, here against Afghanistan, take the pitch out of the equation. Bowling comes down to skill and control. And that is exactly what this young man (Manav Suthar) showed." He also admired his consistency with the ball. "Manav Suthar has a simple, repeatable action. That gives him great accuracy. He knows exactly where each ball is going to land. That kind of control is rare. When you have drift and can land the ball in the right spot consistently, you don't need a turning track to take wickets. Suthar outsmarted the Afghanistan batters not with a sharp turn, but with flight, dip, and precision." Also Read | Record Alert! Manav Suthar Produces Best Debut Spell by an Indian This Century What Does This Mean for Ravindra Jadeja? With all the buzz surrounding Suthar, recently Ajit Agarkar had the final say, stating that Jadeja still remains the top Indian spinner in Tests. "He (Jadeja) is still an integral part of the team. With regards to ODIs, with 15-16 months left, we want to try and assess what our options are, keeping in mind the conditions in South Africa are. We know what Jadeja and Axar can do. With regards to the test, he still remains the No. 1 spinner." It's safe to say Jadeja's spot is not at risk currently, but the debut of Suthar will surely give India a quality option for the future. With Axar Patel also still in contention, India's quest for finding life beyond Ashwin and ultimately Jadeja may well be looking promising. His test against Sri Lanka, New Zealand and Australia will be the tests for Suthar, but he showed us against Afghanistan that India already has its promising spin-bowling all-rounder for the future.
