Indian Premier League (IPL) is a league where players can instantly become stars. There are players who play so well in one season that everyone is talking about them. But all of them do not remain in the limelight for long. There are many players who have shone brightly for some time and vanished from the scene forever. We refer to them as one-season wonders. Below is a list of 7 IPL one-season wonders. 7 IPL Players Who Were One-Season Wonders Sr. No Players 1 Paul Valthaty 2 Kamran Khan 3 Yo Mahesh 4 Manpreet Gony 5 Rahul Sharma 6 Swapnil Asnodkar 7 Shivil Kaushik Paul Valthaty Image Source: AFP Paul Valthaty is one of the biggest examples of one-season wonder in IPL history. During IPL 2011, representing Kings XI Punjab (currently Punjab Kings), Valthaty scored magnificent 120 runs off 63 deliveries against Chennai Super Kings (CSK). This innings turned him into an overnight sensation. He concluded the season with 463 runs in 14 matches, and fans began believing that he was the next big thing. But after that incredible season, Valthaty was unable to play the same way again. Injuries and loss of form marred his career. He gradually faded from the IPL and was hardly spotted in domestic cricket as well. He was last seen playing in domestic circuit in 2014 where he represented Air India in the BCCI Corporate Trophy. A very poor boy, hailing from Uttar Pradesh, became a sensation when he bowled with terrific speed and swing for Rajasthan Royals during IPL 2009. He was discovered by the great Shane Warne and selected for his raw ability. Kamran used to bowl lethal yorkers. He even got a chance to bowl a Super Over against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and he won it successfully for his side. However, after that year, Kamran lost the path. His bowling action attracted some attention, and injuries spoiled it further. Very soon, Kamran was eliminated from the IPL and never came back. He took 16 wickets in that year and was among the best Indian bowlers. Following a good first season, everyone expected him to develop and become a familiar figure in IPL and Indian cricket. But Yo Mahesh was unable to sustain his form. His bowling lost its effectiveness, and injuries also contributed to his decline. Even after shifting to Chennai Super Kings later, he was unable to regain his position. He bowled excellently and even made handy runs with the bat. His good work earned him a call-up into the Indian side for an ODI series. Gony took 17 wickets in IPL 2008 and seemed to have a promising future. But in the subsequent seasons, he was not able to repeat such performances. He played for Kings XI Punjab and Gujarat Lions subsequently but was unable to revive his IPL career. Gony's tale indicates how difficult it is to sustain success in a competitive league like IPL. He bowled extremely economically and took crucial wickets. His economy rate of about 6 runs per over made him standout in a tournament where big hitting was the hallmark. Rahul Sharma's consistent good form in the IPL helped him get selected into the Indian team. However, he performed badly at the international level and even later in IPL as well. He suffered from injury issues as well as was involved in some drug controversies that hindered his career. After some seasons, he disappeared from IPL as well as domestic cricket. Playing for Rajasthan Royals, Asnodkar formed a strong opening pair with Graeme Smith. He scored quick runs at the top and helped Rajasthan Royals win matches. He finished IPL 2008 with 311 runs in only 9 matches with a strike rate of more than 133. But after the season, Asnodkar wasn't able to maintain his performance. He lost his grip when bowlers decoded his vulnerabilities. He played some more seasons but never at his best. Shivil Kaushik Image Source: BCCI Shivil Kaushik will be remembered for his unorthodox and individualistic bowling style. He started representing Gujarat Lions during IPL 2016. His action was very distinct, more like the style of South African bowler Paul Adams, and that was hard for the batsmen to target him. Kaushik bowled some fine spells in IPL 2016 and even picked some big wickets. But when the batsmen understood his style of bowling, he became less effective. He played some games in 2017 but soon vanished from cricket. His peculiar action attracted people's attention but was not enough to carry out a long life in cricket. It is not an easy job to deliver consistently year by year. Players such as Paul Valthaty, Kamran Khan, Yo Mahesh, and others were fantastic and had memorable seasons. But maintaining the top spot requires hard work, fitness, form, and occasionally a dash of luck as well. These 7 one-season wonders remind us of how intense cricket can be. Their brief but memorable IPL rides still exist in the hearts of cricket fans. There are plenty of new players who arrive every year. Some remain; some disappear. But the magic they weave, if only for one season, is a part of IPL history forever.
